The Pennington Shade Tree Committee (STC) was created by ordinance in 1915 to advise Pennington Borough council and residents on all issues regarding trees.  The committee is comprised of 7 volunteers, who serve 3 year terms, in addition to members of the Public Works department and a council liaison.    Members of the STC attend continuing education and conferences to stay abreast of current tree knowledge.  The committee collaborates with Public Works and residents to maintain the health and diversity of the borough’s urban forest and its street trees.  

Responsibilities of the STC:

  • maintains an inventory of all Pennington street trees
  • writes and updates a Community Forestry management plan for Pennington
  • advises on the regulation, planting, care and removal of street trees in the public right-of-way or on borough property
  • promotes public education on tree care and potential tree pests / diseases
  • suppports grants to fund planting and maintenance of trees
  • assists in renewing the borough's Tree City USA status
  • celebrates Arbor Day each year by planting a tree on borough land, with participating school students
  • participates in public events such as Pennington Day
